Don’t you just feel so bad for those kids locked up at detention centers? Well, don’t feel too sorry for these kids. Sure, they’ve had their troubles and all, but the staff at the only institute in Vermont is extremely lax. The kids can get away with nearly anything, unless the few staff members that care are working. People fight right in front of them and they merely stand there. When someone bleeds though, that’s when they interrupt. The fact that some of the kids are mentally unstable doesn’t even matter to them.
First there are the troublemakers. They’re the ones that steal and party and do drugs. The fact that those actions got them put away doesn’t mean a thing. The activities still go on, half in private and half right in front of everyone. Kids still do drugs and kids still have sex. The guards are like part of the furniture; their presence is disregarded. It’s like the outside world all over again minus the clubs and houses. Of course, the troublemakers still sneak out to the clubs and to the houses, usually thanks to their friends on the outside. Delinquents rule the facility, leaving the mentally unstable kids to stay in the shadows. They only interact with them if they need something very badly.
The other group of kids can be described as psychotic, though many come from troubled homes. Their conditions range from being suicidal to being much too violent, with some paranoid kids there too. It is easy for them to harm themselves, and it happens quite often. They’ll also pick fights with other patients if it is in their nature, leading to staff involvement and possibly isolation. The ones that don’t make a scene tend to stay in their cells and keep to themselves, only going out if they must or if there’s a chance they can break the rules for their benefit. These patients also tend to get taken advantage of by the other patients. They’ll do their dirty work or get conned into trying things they wouldn’t normally.
If you send your child to this facility, they will be sure to be ignored and forgotten about for days on end, and you won’t hear of any of it. Even if they’re badly injured, you will never know unless it gets bad. So make the choice, let the problem get bad or send them away.
