In the floor of an overgrown reseach facility lays an open journal. Blood and ink mix into one on the pages and it's barely legible. But what is legible can be easily read, despite the scrawl across the pages.
"November 16th, 2367
This entry comes swift and as hard as the pale scythe of death herself. We can't control it any longer. Bradley and Veronica were the first to fall victim to Lady Scarlet. Maybe... just maybe the General will see what happened and call the whole thing off. Lady Scarlet is too deadly to use, even against our greatest enemies. No one should have to die like this. Not ever. Wait... here comes the General I'll - "
The rest of the entry is smudged and unable to be read. Turning the page it's apparent the writer did not make an entry for almost a month. It reads as follows:
"December 11th, 2367
I can't write much. I have to evacuate. She's gotten out. Lady Scarlet. I have to get out. I don't want to die this way. I have a wife and kids for crying out loud! What will they do if I die? What will they think when they find out what I was working? A new cancer drug... I wish it was true. Biological warfare is a horrible thing to deal with. Even create. I want my hands clean of it all. Lady Scarlet... the deaths of my co-workers... the suicide of the General. I'm leaving the research papers with this journal... if anyone should find this. Leave immediately. It's too dangerous... way too dangerous.
Professor Eric Mane"
Under the page is a manilla folder containing everything one would need to know about "Lady Scarlet". Lady Scarlet is a deadly virus that kills within hours of infection. The symptoms are mild until the second hour. Coughing, hot flashes, blurred vision, nausea, light-headedness. That was just the second hour. The third hour would consist of coughing up blood, uncontrollable shaking, and nosebleeds. Most don't make it to the fourth hour, and those symptoms have not be documented.
Lady Scarlet was manufactured to be used in war, much like mustard gas and nerve gas. Unfortunately, it was so deadly and so uncontrollable that it got out of hand. As researchers fled the facility, they bore the virus with them. Within days, it had spread across the country. Within weeks, it plagued more than half the world. In mere months, the whole world was silent. 99 out of every 100 people died as a result. 1 out of 100 were immune to the virus. About half killed themselves in pure misery that those around them died and yet, they survived. But, some, the strong ones, survived. They survived and due to the human's innate nature to gather in groups, they started anew.
A new society. A new civilization. A new chance at Utopia.
This roleplay takes place 10 years later, in a converted city known as New Utopia. The fear of Lady Scarlet lurks everywhere. No one feels that it is gone. And not to mention the vigilantes that have grown up. Crime and murder is everywhere. After all, not everyone is on the light side of the the line.
[Plotline idea was taken from Stephen King's The Stand in parts. I do not hold claim to the book or miniseries.]
